Previously, only two divisions of Pfizer had corresponding leaders, namely, the general manager in charge of anti-infection business and the general manager in charge of tumor and rare diseases business. After the reorganization, the anti-infection business was transferred to the hospital emergency business, and the tumor and rare diseases business was split into two business divisions: tumor and rare diseases. As a result, the position of the boss of four major business divisions is empty. Such organizational restructuring will have little impact on Pfizer’s senior management team in China. As a very senior professional manager, Peng Zhenke has successively taken charge of Bristol-Myers Squibb China, Sanofi China and Sanofi Jianzan Europe, and is very familiar with China’s culture and market competition environment, and has sufficient leadership and cultural adaptability to promote such organizational changes.    

However, this restructuring will inevitably weaken the roles of the chief operating officer and the vice president of marketing in the previous organizational structure. The chief operating officer set up by pharmaceutical companies is often trained as a presidential candidate. With the participation of Peng Zhenke and the establishment of the mechanism of six business divisions reporting directly to the president, the role of the chief operating officer has become subtle. At the same time, the positioning of the vice president of marketing in charge of cross-brand marketing strategy has also been split into various business divisions with the establishment of six business divisions, losing its independent value. Huizhi embraces digitalization.

The main line of these functions is to help Roche Pharmaceuticals communicate and connect with global product research and development, and help Roche China to better and faster introduce Roche’s global new products under the market changes that heavy products such as rituximab and trastuzumab for injection are gradually listed.    

Huizhi’s initiatives are full of innovative exploration and embrace digitalization. Among all multinational pharmaceutical companies, Huizhi has the best conditions to explore digital innovation and transformation. Different from other mainstream pharmaceutical companies positioning innovative drugs, Huizhi sells generic drugs and original research drugs, and the profit margin of these products will be gradually compressed to a very small level. For enterprises, it is necessary to improve operational efficiency and user experience by means of digitalization. In recent years, under the impetus of national policies, quantity purchasing and medical insurance reform, the traditional business model of multinational pharmaceutical companies relying on original drugs is no longer feasible, and multinational pharmaceutical companies have also abandoned the lucky mentality that "the policy is just testing the water" at the beginning of the quantity purchasing policy. Except for a few enterprises that position original research drugs and generic drugs like Huizhi, most multinational pharmaceutical companies have clearly recognized the situation and firmly turned to the positioning of innovative drug development. Although the strategic direction is clear, the research and development of innovative drugs often takes ten years, and it takes several years for existing drugs to be introduced into the China market from all over the world. Strategic adjustment often lasts for several years, and turbulence in the adjustment process is inevitable.    

For multinational pharmaceutical companies positioning innovative drugs, the impact of business structure adjustment is not great. The organizational structure model established by selling original research drugs as innovative drugs for many years is still feasible in the New Deal era. The mainstream structure is either a business division system that manages the market and sales, or a structure that separates the market from sales and sets up a separate marketing function. Both models have their rationality. The bosses of multinational pharmaceutical companies set the corresponding organizational structure according to people, time and situation, and adopt one of the two models, or a mixture or variant of the two models.    

Then, the introduction of new products, market access, patient’s ability to pay and digital organizational capabilities have also become the most concerned organizational design areas of multinational pharmaceutical companies besides marketing and sales capabilities. In 1953, Deng Xiaoping was transferred to the central government and became one of the main members of the first generation of the party’s leading collective. While busy, he reads a lot of newspapers every day and participates in reviewing important editorials of People’s Daily. In the sixties and seventies, he was overthrown twice and rose twice. Reading newspapers became one of his main sources of information.

After Deng Xiaoping’s third comeback in 1977, he became the core of the second generation of leading collective of the CPC Central Committee. He has a closer relationship with the newspaper. On May 11th, 1977, Guangming Daily published a famous article "Practice is the only criterion for testing truth". This epoch-making article has the clear support of Deng Xiaoping. The article wrote: "The criterion for testing truth can only be social practice." "The unity of theory and practice is one of the most basic principles of Marxism." Deng Xiaoping criticized the viewpoint of "two whatevers" for many times, and supported the discussion on the standard of truth in the newspaper … One stone stirred up a thousand waves. With the help of this immortal work in the influential and authoritative Central Party newspaper, Deng Xiaoping set off a wave of theory and practice of "emancipating the mind and seeking truth from facts", and the great liberation of thought gave birth to great changes in reform and opening up.

Later, Deng Xiaoping repeatedly emphasized that "our party’s newspapers and periodicals should become the ideological center of national stability and unity" and demanded that "party newspapers and periodicals must unconditionally publicize the party’s ideas". (Meng Hong)

China’s Retail Shuffle: Supergiants lost a total of 4.9 billion a year. Why? Behind the end of retail myth

Gaoxin Retail, the parent company of this well-known retail enterprise, recently released the financial year 2024 performance report, which shows that the company is facing enormous challenges. In the fiscal year ending March 31, although the revenue reached 72.567 billion yuan, it decreased by 13.3% year-on-year. What is more striking is that the net profit returned to the mother recorded a huge loss of 1.668 billion yuan. RT Mart, as a star brand of Gaoxin Retail, had a brilliant retail legend in its development. Since landing in China in 1997, it took only 12 years to reach the peak of the retail industry in mainland China, and won wide acclaim from consumers with the record of not closing a store for 19 consecutive years. However, times have changed, and Gaoxin Retail pointed out in the performance warning that factors such as store losses, asset impairment and goodwill impairment, together with changes in customer consumption habits, have led to the current predicament. According to statistics, since the beginning of 2023, at least 13 RT Mart stores have closed for various reasons.

In the face of difficulties, Gaoxin retail executives did not flinch. Chairman Huang Mingduan stressed that the company’s primary task is to increase revenue and reduce costs, turn losses into profits, adhere to the essence of retail, and return to the original intention of creating value for customers. The joining of the new executive director and CEO, Shen Hui, indicates that the company is actively adjusting its strategy and rebuilding market confidence, with the goal of making RT Mart regain its growth momentum.

Looking back, since it was acquired by Alibaba in 2017, the performance of Gaoxin Retail has fluctuated significantly, especially in the context of the impact of e-commerce and the rapid evolution of retail formats, the traditional hypermarket model in RT Mart has encountered severe challenges. Although Alibaba helped its online transformation, the effect did not meet expectations, which aggravated the financial pressure. At present, RT Mart is seeking a breakthrough in transformation through innovation of business format, renovation of stores and strengthening of online services.

The whole retail industry is also actively exploring ways to change, including developing discount formats, improving shopping experience, deepening community management and accelerating digital transformation to cope with the cold winter of the market. Yonghui Supermarket, Box Horse Fresh Life, CR Vanguard and other enterprises have adopted different strategies to show the self-help and innovation of industry giants.

Although the road ahead is still full of challenges, the resilience and innovative spirit of retail enterprises indicates that the industry is expected to usher in a turning point in constant adaptation and change.
